Yesterday the boys had a school holiday so Dave took a day off and we headed for the mountains. My awesome husband loves to ski and spent many hours on the slopes, but that was all before he married me. I would love for him to ski but life happens with a family and budgets exist and it makes skiing a hard hobby to maintain. Plus we spent about 3.5 yrs in Minnesota where you get lots of snow but not a single ski hill in sight-what a waste of snow.
The last couple years, I have tried harder to give my husband chances to ski. We even went out about 3 years ago and purchased all the gear at a rental store going out of business. And I close my eyes as I see how much we pay, tell myself it is all worth it, and then smile. (Remember I am cheap so skiing just wouldn't naturally be on my radar.) This year for Christmas I gave my husband 2 lift tickets purchased for a great deal at Costco. First of all, I am used to spending lots of money at Costco and that way I wouldn't stress about the money when he was trying to find a day for skiing. So yesterday he sacrificed one of his tickets to spend the day skiing with 3 of his children.
I wish I had pictures but he had his hands full and I was content to keep the girls busy hanging out in the snow and lodge. My husband told me I should be out there but I am sore at the end of the day just walking around the house with this pregnant body so no way. The boys did great on the skis. In fact it is the one sport that Tom is completely enthusiastic about. He loves to zoom down the mountain. And doesn't seem to be intimidated. Jacob is a little more like me on the slopes, more nervous and cautious. Ari being 4 doesn't quite have the athleticism for it but she did manage to ride the lift 2 times and ski down, falling frequently. Lily has one more year to wait and then everyone will move up a size in boots and it is back to buying another set of ski boots for Jacob.
The day ended nearly perfectly until Ari said she felt sick on the roads coming home. And then Jacob about 30 minutes later when we had finally left the winding roads. So one sacrificed cookie bucket and a package of wipes later we were back on the road. Of course the usual craziness of 4 kids occurred and Lily was mad the she didn't get to hold the puke bucket like Ari. And Jacob puking right into our diaper bag-Dave is always telling me to keep it zipped but I guess I never learn. This time the lesson will stick a little better.
All in all the day was a success, we made it home and got the kids to bed and they even made it to school this morning. I was luckily blessed with extra patience yesterday and a good sense of humor. But everything with kids is definitely an adventure. Number 5 may be a few short months away but we are looking forward to him/her knowing the laughter and tears he will bring to our family.
